The "under God" part of the pledge wasn't added until the 50s. There should be articles online about it with exact dates and such.
Has anyone listened to Molly's radio yet on her movie page? I listened to practicly all of them. And there's one called 'Pledge of Allgience.' I was listening to it, but was sort of shocked they didn't say 'Under God' Has anyone else noticed this? It kind of upsets me. I mean, it's our allegiance!
And also I just went to 'fun for girls' on american girl.com and the poll was 'which american girl would you like to dress as?' And they only had 5 of the dolls!!!! That's not right! They had an 'other' which was winning.
Well, besides the bad news, I just got my holiday catalogue yesterday!

With all the issues in the news regarding taking "under God" away from the pledge I fully understand your concern. I was glad when I read the others answer and realize that AG has to be historically accurate.
What I'd like to know is whether Molly and her classmates will be shown extending their arms during the pledge. Before the war, people extended their right hand toward the flag when saying "to the Flag" and then kept it out for the rest of the pledge. But because that gesture became associated with the salutes of Nazism, the custom was changed sometime during the war years. I'm not sure exactly when, and am curious to see what AG has Molly do in the movie.
Just goes to show that the pledge and rituals associated with it are fluid and changable. We have the Knights of Columbus to thank for the addition of the current controversial part...don't want to go into that!
In Texas they do a pledge to the Texas flag and the children are supposed to extend their arms to it. I moved there in high school so I just sat down during it but it still creeped me out. My mother doesn't like it and calls it the 'Heil Texas'.
You said they extended they arm before the war, Molly was during the war - do you know when it was changed, that may answer the question about Molly. If it was already changed, then I'm sure she didn't do that.
It will be interesting to find out. Love history.
he he. The extending arm thing and the Nazi's make me think of the priciple in the grade school that my brother goes to, we call her Hitler in a skirt ( ) She is not very nice.
I thought I saw a picture somewhere of Molly's class slauting to the flag, I think it was on the website.
